Melbourne - 21 April 2004 - Symbol Technologies, Inc., The Enterprise Mobility Company, today introduced two new innovative mobile computing products designed to help enterprises enhance employee productivity, improve customer service, increase inventory velocity and maintain real-time connectivity to information for updates while on the road and in the field.
These capabilities will help strengthen customer service and sales for beverage and snack route delivery people, improve site visits for service and repair technicians and improve pick-up and delivery activities for parcel post and delivery drivers.
The Symbol MC9000-S and MC9000-K are designed to help enterprises seamlessly capture, move and manage information at the point of decision to power mission-critical enterprise mobility applications and improve asset utilisation in the transportation, route accounting/direct store delivery, field service and field sales market segments. These new industrial mobile computers, designed to Symbol’s signature ruggedised specifications, can be used for mobile applications supported by indoor Wi-Fi and outdoor wide-area wireless networks.
These Symbol mobile computers follow the successful introduction of the Symbol MC9000-G, a grip/handle-based mobile computer introduced in October 2003, as part of Symbol’s industrial mobile computing line. The Symbol MC9000-S offers a compact, slimmer format than the MC9000-G and the MC9000-K provides a full-sized keypad format. The Symbol MC9000 family now enables customers to more easily deploy and manage multiple applications, and train their mobile workforces, across an entire enterprise supply chain using a single, high-performance mobile computing platform in three distinct and highly rugged form factors.
"We have integrated advanced mobile technology to help customers quickly deploy a solution that translates into immediate productivity gains and rapid return-on-investment," said Chester Pribonic, Symbol vice president and general manager of the mobile computing division. "This complete family of ‘work-horse’ handhelds is designed from a common computing platform and enables Symbol Business Partners to provide a broad array of value-added mobile applications and solutions."
"Our customers in the transportation and logistics market need a compact, rugged computer with multiple wireless technologies to make their employees more productive and improve business operations," said Jeremy Platt, national practice director for enterprise mobility, Dimension Data, a Symbol business partner. "The MC9000 family gives us tremendous flexibility in specifying the ideal configuration for each and every customer."
According to industry research firm VDC, Symbol holds the number one market share position for rugged handhelds, a segment forecasted to exceed US$2.7 billion by 2007. "Enterprise mobility end users are requesting devices with increasing levels of communication and computing functionality when faced with deployment decisions," said David Krebs, Enterprise Mobility Analyst at VDC. "The Symbol MC9000 family of mobile computing products offers the flexibility and scalability essential for large scale mobile deployments in several industrial sectors."
The Symbol MC9000 portfolio of ruggedised wireless handhelds is specifically suited for mobility applications integral to the supply chain. Target market segments and recommended mobile applications for respective devices include:
- Field Service: The Symbol MC9000-S enables field service personnel to automate services, manage replacement components and inventories, and improve site visit routes and logistics
- Manufacturing: The Symbol MC9000 line offers advanced mobile computing power for mobile workers to manage and improve shipping and receiving, inventory velocity and visibility, asset allocation, line replenishment and order taking.
- Route Accounting/DSD: The Symbol MC9000-S enables route drivers to manage direct store delivery, expedite pre-sales orders, reconcile inventory orders, and track product delivery and stock levels.
- Transportation & Logistics: The Symbol MC9000-K and MC9000-S enable route drivers and shipping and receiving personnel to better manage vehicle and driver resources, track vehicles and maintenance, and improve pick-up and delivery activities.
- Wholesale Distribution: The Symbol MC9000-K and MC9000-S enable warehouse supervisors and dock personnel to better manage inventory velocity, improve yard space allocation and obtain greater visibility into inventory return processing.
Symbol designed the Symbol MC9000 line to include the technology necessary to support today’s advanced mobile computing applications. Symbol mobility advancements, powered by the Intel XScale processor running at 400MHz, feature multiple wireless capabilities for mobile applications across personal area Bluetooth, local area Wi-Fi (802.11b), and GSM/GPRS and/or CDMA wide area networks.
Enterprise mobility applications, driven by Windows Mobile 2003 or CE.Net platforms, take advantage of Symbol’s advanced data capture capabilities using the Symbol 1D scan engine or the Symbol SE 4400 Imaging Engine for omni-directional reading of 1D and 2D symbologies, as well as image capture. Symbol’s advanced power management features and large battery capacity enable device operation typically for more than eight hours.
In addition, the Symbol MC9000-K and MC9000-S feature large 3.8 inch ¼ VGA displays, are able to withstand 6-foot drops to concrete across the entire temperature range and are IP64-rated for moisture and dust sealing. Symbol offers multiple field replaceable keypad options, enabling customers to use the same device for multiple applications with different data entry requirements.
The Symbol MC9000-K and MC9000-S are now shipping. For more information on these new products, visit the mobile computing section of the Symbol Web site at: www.symbol.com/mobile.
