Australian Enterprises Increase Spending on IP Telephony Equipment, Finds IDC

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, October 6th, 2004 – The Enterprise IP Telephony market has grown 29% in Q204, compared to Q104, according to IDC Australia's latest quarterly "IP Telephony Enterprise Equipment Tracker" which tracks IP Phones, Pure IP-PBXs and Enabled IP-PBXs. This quarter, the segments that contributed the most to the growth of IP Telephony deployments were finance and government.</p>
<p>All segments of this market grew by more than 15%, and as expected IP Phones experienced the highest growth with 44% sequential growth. We are already seeing the emergence of more IP phone vendors in this market, such as Zultys, that are offering competitive priced SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) phones. The majority of the projects continued to be greenfield deployments and end-of-life PABX replacements, but this quarter implementations were boosted by the end of financial year and the Y2K LAN refresh cycle. The finance sector was a great contributor to growth this quarter, with some large financial institutions initiating deployments of IP Telephony.</p>
<p>Managed IP Telephony offerings by telecom carriers and systems integrators are also helping the rapid adoption of VoIP in the enterprise. Handset subsidies, like the ones offered by Optus are also proving to be quite successful.</p>
<p>"Managed IP Telephony offerings and handset subsidies, are helping enterprises to reduce the initial capital expenditure of an IP Telephony implementation, therefore increasing the incentive of an earlier deployment," said Susana Vidal, Telecommunications Analyst at IDC.</p>
<p>Highlights of Q104:</p>
<p>* Cisco continues to be the leader in IP Phones sales in Q204, they also lead the market in 2003. Cisco continues to focus in the medium to large users market segment.
* Avaya had a good quarter in Q204, more than doubling their IP-PBX sales. Avaya is attempting to take advantage of their call centre customer base to go to market.
* 3Com maintains the third spot in the Pure IP-PBX market for Q204. 3Com sales are mainly from the Education and SME sectors.
* Nortel leads the Enabled IP-PBX market. Nortel goes to market offering telephony solutions to their established traditional customer base, and among them they offer IP Telephony.
* Samsung, better known for their TDM (Time Division Multiplex) products, have began to penetrate the IP market, their sales have been focused in the SME space.</p>
