Micromuse Awarded U.S. Patent for Software Technology Behind Netcool/Impact Application - Patent Specifies Methodology for Analysing the Impact of Events on a Business

<p>SYDNEY, Australia, 2 April, 2004 – Micromuse Inc. (Nasdaq: MUSEE), the leading provider of realtime business and service assurance software, announced that it has been issued patent number 6,694,362 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Entitled “Method and System for Network Event Impact Analysis and Correlation with Network Administrators, Management Policies and Procedures,” the patent describes impact analysis technology used in Micromuse’s award-winning Netcool®/Impact™ application.</p>

<p>The Micromuse inventors named on the patent include software engineers Peter Secor and Shoel Perelman, who began work on the Netcool/Impact application in 1997. Micromuse was previously issued two patents for its network discovery technology. The Company currently has additional patents pending, pertaining to technology inventions underlying several Netcool applications including Netcool/OMNIbus™, Netcool/Application Monitors™, Netcool/Service Monitors™, Netcool/Precision™ and Netcool/Visionary™.</p>

<p>The patent, which relates to the monitoring and management of corporate, government and telecommunication networks, describes an impact analysis system for correlating collected event data with administrators, management policies and procedures. The processes described in the patent and used in the Netcool/Impact application allow network administrators to determine quickly and correctly which users and business processes are impacted by incoming events. This helps minimise the impact to critical business processes.</p>
