People Power today launched a suite of ZigBee-speaking sensors to go with its flagship Presence mobile app that can turn almost any iOS/Android device into a security camera. This latest product owes its existence to a successful Indiegogo campaign that raised nearly $90,000 against a $20,000 funding goal.
Presence Security, according to the company, is a complete security solution that combines the app with a raft of physical sensors. There are three different packages, each containing a different combination of sensors and catering to a different budget.
The $199 Entry Pack contains two sets of door/window sensors and one motion sensor. The bundle just above it retails for $299 and includes three door/window detectors and one motion sensor, as well as a sensor each for water, temperature, humidity, and touch. The $499 Premium Pack takes things a step further with six door/window sensors, three motion sensors, three touch sensors, two water sensors, and one sensor each for temperature and humidity.
Each of these packages revolves around the Presence app and the Presence Gateway. The gateway is a ZigBee-to-Wi-Fi bridge that acts as the go-between between the various sensors and your home wireless network, thereby allowing you to control the whole system via the app. It is also central to the company's home-automation ambitions; however, the GE Link smart LED bulb is currently the only device in this category that it supports.
Why this matters: It doesn't get any more DIY than a system that allows you to convert your existing smartphone or tablet into a home-surveillance camera. And the best part is it's relatively inexpensive, even if you include the optional cloud subscription, which gives you 5GB of online storage and a host of other features not found in the free version for just $5 per month.
