iiNet investigates hacking claim

Westnet customer database offered for sale

iiNet subsidiary Westnet has confirmed that it is investigating an alleged database hack.

Cyber War News initially reported claims by a hacker that he had obtained the ISP's database.

iiNet CIO Matthew Toohey said in a statement that the company was investigating the matter and that the incident had been reported to law enforcement agencies.

“iiNet is aware of an incident that may have resulted in unauthorised access to old customer information stored on a legacy Westnet system. Customer username, address, telephone and, in some cases, password information may have been accessed, however, no payment details were stored on the server. The system is now offline and at no further risk,” he said.

iiNet was contacting the 30,827 impacted Westnet customers with a recommendation that they change their passwords associated with their account.

“As precaution, additional steps have been taken to increase the monitoring of impacted accounts,” he said.

"iiNet takes the privacy and security of customer information extremely seriously and is heavily invested in the proactive monitoring of its infrastructure to ensure the risk of such intrusions is minimised.”
