Tatung Leverages the Interwoven Content Provisioning Solution to Ensure ERP System Updates Reach the Right Market at the Right Time, Improving Client Service and Reducing Operational Costs

Sydney, Australia, October 5, 2005 – Interwoven, Inc. (Nasdaq: IWOV), provider of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) solutions for business, today announced that Tatung System Technologies Inc., a leading systems integrator for the manufacturing and medical industries and subsidiary of global manufacturer Tatung Company, is leveraging the Interwoven Content Provisioning solution to ensure the timely and accurate delivery of content to the ERP system serving Tatung Company’s vast worldwide network of manufacturing facilities. With the Interwoven Content Provisioning solution, Tatung System Technologies has been able to automate code and content updates, ensuring that the most relevant ERP system code and content changes are deployed to the right servers in the right markets at the right time for improved client service, reduced operational costs, and increased competitive advantage.

Founded in 1918 and headquartered in Taiwan with offices in 15 countries and 39,000 employees worldwide, Tatung Company is a global leader in the design and manufacturing of a vast array of digital consumer products including consumer PCs, LCD TVs, network-connected devices, storage-based media players, and home appliances. With so many manufacturing facilities located across the globe, Tatung Company enlisted the help of its subsidiary Tatung System Technologies to develop an ERP system for the entire Tatung Company—a system that is referred to by the company as the ‘Global Information Integration System.’ This system was to be installed not only in Tatung Company’s Chinese plants, but also in Tatung Company factories located in the United States, Mexico, the Netherlands, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Czech Republic, necessitating the development of multiple language versions. As a result of the scale and global reach of the ERP system, it quickly became clear that Tatung System Technologies would need to implement an effective content provisioning solution to ensure the seamless and accurate execution of code and content changes to all facilities worldwide.

Previously, Tatung System Technologies relied on proprietary technology systems developed using the COBOL (Common Business-Oriented Language) programming language. However, as Tatung Company embraced a more open information technology infrastructure with the adoption of Microsoft’s .NET programming language for application system development, the company was faced with a greater threat from viruses and hackers, while program management also became more difficult. This complex application programming environment, combined with the need to achieve simultaneous deployment of ERP code and content updates to all Tatung Company worldwide locations, presented a substantial challenge.

Said Tatung System Technologies Vice President Sheng-Shyan Hsieh, “Because Tatung Company has production locations all over the world, code and content changes have to be implemented at a time that conforms to working hours for each country that the system reaches. If code delivery were to be performed manually, our IT department’s manpower would be substantially stretched, operational costs would increase, and language barriers could cause serious delays in addressing system errors.”

After evaluating several vendor offerings, Tatung System Technologies selected the Interwoven Content Provisioning solution because of its market-leading content delivery, rollback ability, and reporting capabilities, as well as the solution’s proven ease of use. Tatung System Technologies was also attracted to Interwoven because of the company’s established reputation in the market for helping other large world-class organisations successfully address their content provisioning challenges.

Leveraging the Interwoven Content Provisioning solution, Tatung System Technologies has been able to automate the entire content provisioning process for Tatung Company, reducing IT project maintenance costs and speeding system development. For example, when an ERP system update is required, a change request can now simply be submitted online, after which it is automatically routed to a programmer to write the necessary code or content change, and then on to the programmer’s supervisor for approval. Once the finished code is approved, it is then dispatched to quality assurance, after which it is sent out to production. This thorough and rapid review process enables Tatung System Technologies to maintain accuracy and quality during system development, while speeding time to market.

Furthermore, Tatung System Technologies has been able to effectively leverage the flow management capabilities of the Interwoven Content Provisioning solution to implement demand management, code change management, quality assurance testing and code delivery flow control. The company has also employed the Interwoven solution’s code and content delivery capabilities to achieve effective management of quality control, quality assurance, and to ensure secure and efficient ERP system content updates to both Tatung Company’s domestic and overseas manufacturing facilities.

“Interwoven is one of our most important collaborative partners,” said Hsieh. “Thanks to Interwoven’s world-class content provisioning technology, we’ve been able to significantly enhance the competitiveness of the services that we provide to our clients across the globe, while also reducing our operational costs. In the future, we plan to continue increasing the use of the Interwoven Content Provisioning solution across the entire Tatung Company.”

“In today’s strict regulatory environment, enterprises across industries are increasingly faced with new challenges regarding how to track and monitor all types of content across the organisation, including the flow of content to browser-based applications,” said Mike Chen, managing director for Greater China, Interwoven. “Tatung System Technologies’ decision to adopt the Interwoven Content Provisioning solution sets a good example for how enterprises can adopt the right technologies to not only address emerging compliance regulations, but simultaneously improve processes for greater competitive advantage, lower operational costs, and improved customer service.”
