McAfee AVERT to provide daily DATs
- 15 February, 2005 13:35

Sydney, 15 February 2005 – McAfee’s anti-virus emergency response team (AVERT) today announced that it will provide DATs (virus definition data files) on a daily basis beginning 24 February 2005. Currently, McAfee provides DATs on a weekly basis for customers using McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, McAfee WebShield, McAfee GroupShield and McAfee NetShield.

McAfee AVERT has moved to the daily distribution of DATs based on the increase of new threats it reported in 2004. McAfee AVERT is currently adding detection for a minimum of 50 threats per day, most of which are bots, backdoor trojans, and password stealing trojans. In addition, the research organisation saw a dramatic increase in adware and spyware, resulting in the need for more timely updates. AVERT strongly recommends regular DAT updating of McAfee anti-virus software to ensure optimal virus protection and removal of threats from systems and networks.

"Throughout 2004, we saw a ten-fold increase in the number of virus submissions, a 250 per cent increase in the rate of new malware development and over a 75 per cent increase in the number of emergency DAT releases," said Allan Bell, McAfee APAC marketing director. "With Daily DATS, we can cut down on emergency DAT releases and provide our customers with a more streamlined approach to ensure the most up-to-date protection is available for them. Our customers will use the same update methods that are available today, and can be notified by our daily DAT notification service, which will provide a link that directs them to the download site. Additionally, customers can use the product's auto-update features."

The McAfee AVERT DAT Notification Service is a free subscription-based service that is offered to McAfee customers using McAfee virus protection software. The service will send notifications to subscribers daily, Monday through Friday, including most holidays, with additional notifications when an emergency set of DATs has been released due to a threat that AVERT assigns a medium risk or higher. The notifications will ensure that McAfee customers get timely notification that a new set of DATs is available, so they can begin to download the most robust anti-virus detection and cleaning possible.

The AVERT DAT Notification Service is currently available to McAfee customers. Daily email notifications will begin on February 24, 2005, in collaboration with the first release of the Daily DATs.
