Metlifecare gains IT Christmas bonus that lasts year-round

 • 08 February, 2008 10:52

IT staff at Metlifecare Ltd, New Zealand’s leading operator of lifestyle villages, received an additional Christmas present this festive season, courtesy of StorageCraft – they no longer had to attend work to change data storage tapes during the holidays.

Today the process is automated by StorageCraft’s ShadowProtect Server, which provides fast and reliable disk-based disaster recovery, system migration and real-time data protection for Windows servers.

“In the past we always had staff changing tapes over the Christmas period. Now this is no longer a requirement, they can enjoy their Christmas break fully,” said Metlifecare’s IT Manager/Infrastructure Engineer, Kai Sander. “However, ShadowProtect offers far more by way of technology, operational and cost benefits.”

In line with his focus on maintaining a usable and current system with minimum downtime and maximum efficiencies, Kai has deployed eight StorageCraft ShadowProtect Server Edition licences in a VMWare Virtual Production environment, plus the unique ShadowProtect IT Edition. These have replaced Symantec Backup Exec.

“ShadowProtect allows us to protect data and key databases every 15 minutes throughout the day, with virtually zero impact on production systems,” says Kai. “It ensures that we will never lose more than 15 minutes of data, Exchange or SQL transactions after a crash or corruption.”

He adds: “We have found it to be functional, reliable and cost effective. It is intuitive, very easy to use, and works out of the box. I am confident that for the first time our backup, recovery and DR strategy works and is able to be tested and proven. Our previous product was expensive, complex and at best unreliable. We have deployed ShadowProtect for less than the annual maintenance on that solution, and this represents exceptional value for money.”

Using the hardware independent restore (HIR) capabilities and integration between VMware and ShadowProtect, Metlifecare was able to migrate its physical servers to virtual servers in minutes. IT staff take an ExactState™ image of a production server and with a few mouse clicks, bring it up in a virtual environment.

For the first time, the IT department can validate its DR strategy by performing a complete test restore into a virtual environment without impacting production systems.

Metlifecare implemented the new technology, requiring minimal telephone help from StorageCraft. NZ reseller Maclean Computing will be the vendor for future ShadowProtect licences.
