Revolution or Evolution? IDC Predicts Disruption in Laser MFD Market

 • 24 September, 2007 12:12

NORTH SYDNEY, September 24, 2007 - IDC’s latest industry analysis (IDC Australia Laser MFD Tracker, Q207) reveals the Australian laser MFD market continues its rapid expansion. Growth is a combination of factors with falling hardware prices coupling with colour capabilities and more affordable and flexible service/solutions agreements. Whilst IDC predicts these trends to continue, the market dynamics have the potential to rapidly change the competitive environment.

"The growth within the departmental MFD, especially copier-based, space has been very consistent," says Katarzyna Czubak, Market Analyst, Hardcopy Peripherals at IDC Australia. "Cannibalisation of monochrome by colour persists. IDC’s analysis highlights that monochrome unit placements in Q207 were 16.8% lower than the corresponding period last year. Simultaneously colour MFDs enjoyed 30.2% growth. In addition to unit growth, IDC expects additional revenue streams attached to hardware (such as managed print services, and document management solutions) to start gaining more momentum gradually. There is also a potential jolt on the horizon - copier vendors that traditionally have dominated the departmental printing environment may face a new threat - the genre of inkjet-based MFDs positioned at the enterprise space."

"At the other end of the market," pointed out Czubak, "printer-based A4 MFDs are flooding the channels. Colour shipments in Q207 leapt dramatically to more than double the volumes registered in the same period last year. Q207 also saw new colour MFDs selling for half the price of colour laser MFDs sold in the market so far. Hence, in future IDC expects that A4 colour MFD market will exhibit once again massive growth with rapidly declining selling prices."
