For the 1st Time Australian CIO's Rank Organising and Utilising Data in their TOP 10 Challenges, Finds IDC

 • 13 February, 2007 10:20

NORTH SYDNEY, February 12, 2007 - The IDC 'Forecast for Management' survey confirms most CIO's now have a seat at the executive table and can positively influence the direction of IS strategy and continue to improve their enterprises ability to be agile and respond to changing market conditions.

IDC’s 2006-2007 ‘Forecast for Management’ study has found that the focus for most CIO's over the past twelve months has been on improvements to operational efficiencies, business processes and re-engineering the supply chain which in turn has resulted in increased turnover.

Whilst these same CIO’s continue to face a number of challenges. New platform migration, reducing costs, keeping abreast of technology and meeting user expectations remain in the top 5 for the second year in a row.

Australian Top 10 CIO Challenges

Ranking

1 New platform migration
2 Reducing costs
3 Keeping abreast of technology
4 Meeting user expectations
5 Align IT to business
6 Change Management
7 Information security
8 Managing the Network

IDCs study also finds that CIO’s are focusing more attention on recruitment, retention and the motivation of key staff to halt attrition trends. Australian CIOs have an attrition rate of 6.5% in contrast to New Zealand CIOs with attrition rates of 10.2%. The good news is in the last twelve months this has improved slightly for New Zealand down from 11.6%, but worsened by 0.8% in Australia. 33% of CIO’s are using recruitment agencies to replace lost staff in their roles.

"The 2006 Forecast for Management Survey confirmed that many CIOs now have a seat at the executive table. CIOs in 2007 continue to focus on rationalisation, standardisation, and improving the efficiency of all operational and business processes. Virtualisation technologies are now being investigated by many in the attempt to free up resources that could be utilised more effectively. IDC also found that the mobile workforce continues to demand greater support for their devices; hence, CIOs are challenged to stay constantly up to date with new technology developments at the same time as maintaining secure networks and keeping data generation under control. CIOs are also still challenged with the recruitment, motivation and retention of key staff for another year," said Catherin Bennett, Director for IDC’s IT Management Programme.
