DELL[TM] DELIVERS NEW DESKTOP COMPUTERS WITH INNOVATIVE, SPACE-SAVING DESIGNS, LATEST TECHNOLOGIES

Stable Image Assurance Program Helps Customers Keep Support Costs Down

SYDNEY, June 22, 2004 - Dell today announced two new corporate desktop computer systems that feature innovative new designs and several key technologies for increased performance. The company also unveiled a software assurance program to help reduce software complexity while keeping support costs low.

“These new systems deliver the latest technologies combined with an innovative industrial design for corporate environments,” said Robert Vinokurov, product marketing director of OptiPlex and Precision for Asia Pacific. “Customers that have delayed the replacement of their desktop systems can take advantage of the tremendous performance and management gains found in the SX280 and GX280.”

According to industry analyst firm Gartner, aging installed computers are ready to be replaced. Gartner estimates that more than 30 percent of installed computers are at least three years old. In its most recent forecasts, Gartner notes that almost 100 million computers will be replaced in 2004, and nearly 120 million more will be replaced in 2005.

Systems Leverage Latest Technology Advancements

The OptiPlex[TM] SX and GX280 systems feature the new Intel[R] Pentium 4 500 family of processors and the 915G Express chipset with a full suite of new technologies that complement a new architecture and deliver more performance and headroom for future needs. The new platforms introduce DDR2 memory, the next generation memory architecture that will support up to double the memory throughput of today’s DDR technology. DDR2 optimises the desktop architecture by removing potential bottlenecks caused by increased bandwidth demands from faster processors, graphics and I/O subsystems.

The new platforms also include: PCI-Express with up to three times the input/output bandwidth of the previously used PCI platform; Serial ATA hard drives that provide more storage space with faster access to data; and the new Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 that is designed to provide major improvements in integrated graphics performance versus previous Intel embedded graphics solutions.

Cutting-Edge Form Factors for Many Computing Environments

The OptiPlex GX and SX280 feature four different form factors that are image compatible and easy to service and manage. The mainstream GX280 is available in three form factors that can be deployed to users with a wide range of performance, size and expansion requirements.

The completely redesigned SX280 features a new compact chassis. Ideal for space-constrained workspace settings, it can be installed horizontally or vertically beneath a desk, to a wall or behind the optional SX280 flat panel monitor to decrease the overall footprint of the system. The system's hot-swappable media bay accommodates any module from the popular Dell Latitude[TM] D-Family of notebooks. The SX280 offers a wide range of layered security features that prevent unauthorised access to components and media modules with a flexible, sequential locking system.
