NETAPP INTRODUCES AUTOMATED ONLINE BACKUP AND RAPID DATA RECOVERY SOLUTION FOR ORACLE® DATABASE ENVIRONMENTS

NetApp® SnapManager® for Oracle Bolsters Oracle® Database Productivity, Availability and Uptime

SUNNYVALE, Calif. —September 14, 2005 — Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), today introduced SnapManager for Oracle to further simplify the backup and recovery of Oracle® databases on NetApp storage. NetApp SnapManager for Oracle leverages the unique power of NetApp Snapshot™ technology, and is a tightly integrated disk-based backup and granular recovery solution for Oracle customers using Oracle Automatic Storage Management technology. The solution provides customers with continuous uptime for online backups. NetApp SnapManager turns a multi-step backup and restore process into two simple commands from a single host machine.

In the event of data corruption, SnapManager empowers database administrators (DBAs) to rapidly restore their Oracle data within one minute with no impact to database performance—as opposed to the average of one hour that is required to restore data from conventional tape backup solutions. The software provides DBAs even more options and flexibility for their Oracle Database on NetApp storage resources.

Additionally, SnapManager for Oracle automates the cloning of Oracle databases by leveraging NetApp FlexClone™ technology, the unique cloning functionality NetApp provides with the Data ONTAP™ 7G software. FlexClone improves the development productivity dramatically, enabling cloned environments to be created within minutes, instead of the days required to set up identical environments without FlexClone technology.

The solution automatically discovers all the underlying files of an Oracle Database for the operations including backup, restore and recover, and clone. This helps DBAs focus on what they manage—the database—rather than manually manage the storage systems, disks, host volumes, or host file systems. This slashes maintenance time, eliminates the need to create scripts, and reduces human error.

“NetApp SnapManager for Oracle has the potential to eliminate 90-percent of the complexity associated with managing backup and recovery for our Oracle on Linux environment,” said Hanan Hit, senior database architect at Mercury. “In addition to streamlining management, features like real-time backup validation protect against physical and logical corruptions so there are no costly surprises during recovery procedures both locally and at remote data centers. What's most impressive is that SnapManager for Oracle does for block-based environments what the network file system (NFS) protocol does for file-based systems─management of even an Oracle on storage area network (SAN) environment becomes automated and simple.”

“SIG is a leading institutional sales, research and market making firm. We offer renowned execution expertise in listed NASDAQ, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), options, program trading, and American Depositary Receipts (ADRs). Naturally, the importance of backing up and restoring data is critical to us,” said Dave Lenowitz, global head of Technology at Susquehanna International Group. “We are already familiar with NetApp FlexClone technology, which is used to improve productivity of test environments. We also rely on NetApp Snapshot technology—specifically SnapRestore®—to minimize recovery time and effort significantly. When we heard that NetApp would be unveiling SnapManager for Oracle it immediately sparked excitement and creativity in terms of how we could simplify and strengthen our approach to backing up and recovering our database environment.”

“SnapManager for Oracle was developed based on the core NetApp value—simplifying data management,” said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Products and Partners at Network Appliance. “SnapManager for Oracle further strengthens the NetApp portfolio that complements Oracle enterprise database environments by leveraging the capabilities of Oracle Automatic Storage Management, highlighting our tight technology partnership with Oracle. This solution leverages the power of NetApp technology with Oracle Automatic Storage Management technology, in addition to the joint services and support that Oracle and NetApp have in place that have historically set NetApp apart from our competitors.”

SnapManager for Oracle is available immediately on a worldwide scale in a controlled release basis, and will be generally available in January 2006. For more information please visit http://www.netapp.com/products/software/snapmanager-oracle.html .
