Experts to unite on engineering a better world wide web

 • 22 July, 2005 16:18

Web engineering is set to emerge as a professional entity in its own right at the fifth International Conference on Web Engineering (ICWE2005) being held next week at the University of Technology, Sydney.

The conference is bringing together leading academic and industry figures from around the world including the lead engineer of Google Maps Lars Rasmussen and organisational psychologist Craig Errey, a critic of the IT sector's record in meeting the requirements of business.

The conference focuses on the methodologies, techniques and tools that support the development, use, and evaluation of complex web applications.

Professor David Lowe from the UTS Faculty of Engineering said web engineering had been a catchall heading for the work of people from a wide range of disciplines, but the field was now mature enough to warrant the founding of a professional association – a key piece of business for the conference.

"People working in the field need a professional body to take ownership of its development and draw together diverse threads of research and practice," Professor Lowe said.

The conference's concerns will include business processes for applications on the web, data models for web information systems, multimedia authoring tools and software, web services development and deployment and the performance and usability of web-based applications.

ICWE2005 is jointly organised by Southern Cross University, the University of Technology, Sydney, the University of Western Sydney and Wollongong University.
