Increased Competition in Australian PC Market Drives Growth in Q1, Finds IDC

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, May 16th, 2005 – IDC has recently released the preliminary results for the combined Australia (Desktop and Notebook) market for 1Q 2005. The results show the Australian PC market increased by 6% sequentially and by 15% compared to the same period in 2004.</p>
<p>IDC found the first quarter of 2004 to be a strong quarter. This period kept true to seasonal form with the education and consumer markets remaining strong through February, finishing off with the back to school and back to work specials. Corporate demand picked up towards the end of January however most of the large-scale contracts were pushed forward into the second quarter before the end of financial year.</p>
<p>One of key impacts on 1Q 2005 was the creation of the new Ingram Micro which combined the operations of the two largest distributors in the Australia. Ingram Micro Australia now distributes for the following vendors; Asus, Acer, BenQ, Fujitsu, HP, IBM, Samsung, Toshiba, and Sony who are all vying for position within the channel partner.</p>
<p>IDC research revealed that both the desktop and notebook PC markets enjoyed growth with the PC market segments showing the following sequential growth/decline:</p>
<p>* Commercial Desktops 4.7%</p>
<p>* Consumer Desktops -4.4%</p>
<p>* Commercial Notebooks 19.8%</p>
<p>* Consumer Notebooks 2.3%</p>
<p>"The market in 1Q 2004 performed very much in line with expectations, aside from the stand-out performance from the commercial notebook PC market. A general swelling in demand from the SME and education markets, combined with a handful of significant tenders caused very strong growth. Additionally, the growth of vendors such as LG, Asus and other new vendors, is causing prices to be pushed down in the notebook market, " said Michael Sager, Market Analyst, PC Hardware.</p>
<p>"The vendor rankings for 1Q remained relatively unchanged with HP again holding the top spot despite losing ground in market share. Dell also maintained in its holding pattern of second place in the local market while losing a minor amount of market share. The third place Acer has been continuously growing over the past year and tipped 10% market share for the first time, leveraging its strengths in the consumer, education, and SME markets."</p>
<p>"IBM had the highest growth rate of vendors in the top ten, largely on the back of the increase in its notebook PC performance in the first quarter. Toshiba and Apple, who were the 'shining stars' of the fourth quarter in 2004 both experienced declines in share as they took the fifth and sixth positions. Rounding out the top 7 was Optima who saw a move back into the upper echelon of the local market with strong growth in both notebook and desktop PCs, " added Mr Sager.</p>
