Research Chair in IT business research established at the University of Technology, Sydney

<p>Leading worldwide information technology research and advisory firm,
Gartner Inc, has chosen the University of Technology, Sydney as its
partner to drive a higher level of interest and activity by business and
government in information technology and management in Australia.</p>
<p>Professor Eng Chew, the former CIO of SingTel Optus, has been appointed
by UTS as Research Chair in Business and IT Strategy. This position was
created with the support of Gartner in the UTS Faculty of Information
<p>Dean of the Faculty, Professor Tharam Dillon, said the new Research
Chair would focus on the creation and execution of business and IT
strategy, IT management best practices, and innovative uses of IT and
telecommunications to support business growth and operational excellence.</p>
<p>"This initiative is part of Gartner's commitment to the ongoing
development of the Australian IT Industry," Professor Dillon said. "It
also aligns closely with the UTS mission as a leading industry-focused
research and higher education institution."</p>
<p>"The university's preeminence in industry-based IT research and its IT
Management Program were important considerations for Gartner in
establishing the Chair at UTS."</p>
<p>Gartner's Asia Pacific Executive Director and Group Vice President,
Terry Pascoe, said the Chair would assist in the firm's knowledge
development in the region reinforcing Gartner’s position as market leader.</p>
<p>"We are looking to the UTS partnership to feed into Gartner's regional
research and advisory initiatives where appropriate. It will also
include support in developing some of our regional markets," he said.</p>
<p>Professor Chew was selected after an industry-wide search for a senior
business IT executive with a proven track record in CIO-level management
and advanced research and development achievements.</p>
<p>He amassed extensive IT and business management experience in his seven
years with Optus and was renowned for his success as CIO in turning
around the Optus IT business, resulting in significant contribution to
the firm's bottom line.</p>
<p>Professor Chew also has an impressive research and development track
record in IT and telecommunications, having been research leader in
telecommunications networks and services for over eight years at the
Telstra Research Laboratories.</p>
<p>In addition he has held senior roles in software product and system
integration developments with Unisys and the Digital Equipment Corporation.</p>
<p>During the 1990s Professor Chew held the Chair of the International
Telecommunication Union / International Standards Organization (ITU/ISO)
Committee for Open Distributed Processing, which defines the standards
for enterprise architecture specification.</p>
