Customers turn to Novell’s Linux Indemnification Program in Australian and New Zealand

 • 16 February, 2004 14:29

While it was reported in LINUX WORLD on Wednesday last week (11/02/04) that SCO has made no sales of its Intellectual Property Licence in Australia and New Zealand, Novell is currently experiencing significant interest from customers in their Linux Indemnification program in the region.

To date, Novell has had numerous government agencies and private corporations inquiring about the Linux Indemnification program

David Lenz, Director of Sales and Marketing, Novell Asia Pacific said that he has recently handled many inquiries from large organisations who are considering moving across to Linux and want the piece of mind of the Novell indemnification program.

"Specifically what the program means for Australian businesses or organisations interested in running Novell's enterprise SUSE LINUX solutions is that they will be protected from potential copyright infringement claims such as those claimed by the SCO Group. We are finding organisations are favouring this program rather than bowing to pressure from SCO.

“Novell is in a very strong position at the moment in regard to the unique rights to UNIX and we have used this position to further support the open source movement in Australia,” said Lenz.

“Novell is doing more than talking about Linux; we’re developing products and implementing solutions in large corporations and government agencies to make Linux real, right now. Novell's indemnity program means that Australian organisations, schools and government agencies can choose Linux with confidence.”

In January 2004, Novell released their indemnification program designed for enterprise customers of Linux. Under the program:
*Indemnification is offered for copyright infringement claims made by third parties against registered Novell customers who obtain SUSE LINUX Enterprise Sever 8 and who after January 12, 2004 obtain upgrade protection and a qualifying technical support contract from Novell or a participating Novell or SUSE LINUX channel partner.
* Customers must accept the program terms and conditions including caps and other limitations.

Additional details on the program are available at http://www.novell.com/licensing/indemnity
