HP's Colin Henderson believes the security industry needs to become more adept at understanding the role of big data in security analysis, to try and stay ahead of an increasingly sophisticated and collaborative “black hat” world.
One of the things holding back the use of big data in security monitoring is a clear understanding of the role, nature and characteristics of big data, Henderson, a founding member of HP's security intelligence consulting practise, told AusCERT 2013.
Big data, Henderson said, isn't just a matter of the scale of the data you're dealing with. If you're only dealing with “the same data we already captured, but more of it,” your environment doesn't count as big data.
