S. Korea beefs up national emergency response capability

South Korea's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said it has recently deployed video collaboration solutions that can help it respond promptly to emergency situations.

NEMA has recently deployed Polycom's RealPresence video collaboration solutions to coordinate disaster and emergency efforts among response teams across 17 cities and provinces from the NEMA headquarters in Seoul. The Polycom solutions allow team members to coordinate face-to-face in one collaboration session for faster decision-making.

"In a disaster situation, it is absolutely crucial to be able to respond quickly with precise and accurate sharing of information and initiate real-time collaboration with remote teams," said Dae-Jun Shin, country manager, Polycom Korea. "Polycom video collaboration solutions support major decision makers to respond immediately and effectively to a crisis through prompt communication and face-to-face collaboration in high-definition quality, no matter where they are located."

The Polycom solutions deployed in NEMA include the Polycom HDX 9000 room system and the Polycom RealPresence platform, an interoperable software infrastructure for universal HD video collaboration. NEMA is also using the Polycom RealPresence Collaboration Server for a multi-lateral video conferencing platform to connect the Central Government Complex to the agency's headquarters and branches nationwide.

Polycom said its video conferencing solution can work with NEMA's existing video and voice systems found in the central disaster and safety countermeasures headquarters' situation room.

The Polycom solutions have also helped other government agencies and ministries, including the National Police Agency to coordinate national emergencies by exchanging real-time information, such as videos of remote situations. With face-to-face meetings through video, NEMA is also able to minimise and avoid further damage.
