Siri speaks: Voice of Siri in the UK was recorded six years ago

Jon Briggs, a former journalist, didn't realise he was the voice of Siri until he saw the iPhone 4S on TV

The voice of 'Daniel' - the iPhone 4S' personal assistant better known as Siri - was actually recorded six years ago, it has been revealed.

Jon Briggs, a former journalist and occasional voice-over artist, wasn't aware that he was the voice of Siri until he saw the iPhone 4S on television.

Briggs told the Telegraph that Apple had asked him not to reveal himself as the voice of 'Daniel' - the name of the Siri personal assistant in the UK - but Briggs pointed out that he had never signed a contract with the company.

He had recorded the words some "five or six years ago" for Scansoft - a company that merged with speech-recognition specialists Nuance in 2005.

"Five thousand sentences over three weeks, spoken in a very particular way and only reading flat and even. Then they go away and take all the phonics apart, because I have to be able to read anything you want, even if I've never actually recorded all those words," Briggs told the Telegraph.

Briggs has also done voiceover work on BBC Radio 2 and television show The Weakest Link, as well as being the voice of satnav services for Garmin and TomTom. Briggs insists, though, that he has no bitterness towards Apple, saying: "I got paid a decent sum by Scansoft. I love Apple's products and I think Siri is a game-changer."
