F-Secure today announced a new ‘Digital Vault’ concept that will soon be launched in Australia. Much like a physical vault for real-world assets, the Digital Vault is designed as a secure, centralised repository for a person’s digital assets, such as important documents or photos, through to movie downloads or the content of their mobile phone.

The Digital Vault is designed to act as a hub to which all an individual’s digital devices are connected. For example, their PC, laptop, camera, Personal Video Recorder (PVR) and mobile phone. Whenever a piece of content is added to an individual device, such as a holiday snap taken on a camera phone, it can be automatically uploaded to the person’s Digital Vault.

“The Digital Vault takes backup to the next level,” said Indi Siriniwasa, Regional Director, F-Secure Australia and New Zealand. “To date, conventional backup solutions have mostly been device or platform specific. The Digital Vault has been designed as a centralised repository, to which you can connect almost any digital device.”

The Digital Vault is a hosted solution, and will be offered to consumers via an F-Secure partner, such as an ISP or mobile network operator. Backups can be scheduled to occur automatically at specified times, or ad hoc, as directed by the consumer.

“With so much digital content being created, there is a real need for people to have somewhere safe and secure to keep it all. Current backup solutions tend to be product or platform specific and as a consumer you end up with things backed up in multiple locations, if at all. The Digital Vault brings it all together in one secure, centralised, easy to access online location,” added Indi.

More Than Just Backup

The Digital Vault is about more than just back up. It’s also a mean to share content with friends and family, almost in real time. For example, imagine being able to take holiday photos and have them wirelessly transferred to your Digital Vault so they can instantly be shared with family and friends.

For security and privacy, the Digital Vault has customisable access privileges. This allows, for example, a family to have one shared Digital Vault, but for different content zones to be created, such as a shared zone for all, and a private zone for each family member.

The Digital Vault can also be connected to various third party content sites such as SnapFish, Flickr and Photobucket.

Real Time Mobile Back Up, Over The Air

The Digital Vault incorporates the ability to perform mobile phone back up in real time, over the air, via the customers’ mobile network. Each time a new piece of content is added to a phone, such as a new contact, photo, video or game, all a consumer need do is open the Digital Vault application on the phone and click ‘Perform Backup’. The newly added content is then sent to the Vault via the consumer’s mobile network.

“In Australia, thousands of phones are lost every year,” said Indi. “In the vast majority of cases, this also means the content of the phone is lost too. With the Digital Vault, consumers have a constant mirror of their phone’s content, which included everything from address books, contact lists, emails, photos, games and videos. All of this content can be download to a new device at any time, should the primary device be lost.”
